KARACHI (Jan 18): Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has emphasised that the Sindh Institute of Advanced Endoscopy and Gastroenterology (SIAG) realises a vision of accessible, high-quality medical care for every citizen – “Excellence in healthcare is a right of the people, not a privilege of the few.”

He expressed these views while addressing the second anniversary celebration of SIAG, praising the institute as a shining example of public-private partnership in delivering world-class healthcare to the masses. The event was attended by Health Minister Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho, SIAG Executive Director Prof Saad Khalid Niaz, medical professionals, private sector partners, and other guests at the Dow University Auditorium, Civil Hospital.

Addressing the distinguished gathering, the chief minister reiterated that SIAG embodies his government’s vision of accessible, high-quality care for every citizen. “Excellence in healthcare is a right of the people, not a privilege of the few,” he declared, highlighting how the institute bridges the gap between advanced endoscopic technology and public-sector services that were previously confined to private facilities.

In just two years, SIAG has emerged as one of Pakistan’s most advanced public-sector endoscopy centres, offering free, professional services with dignity. The chief minister credited his government’s policy framework, infrastructure and accountability, combined with private partners’ expertise and technology, for creating a sustainable model comparable to international standards.

Housed in a heritage building at Civil Hospital Karachi – restored by architect Shahid Abdullah – SIAG symbolises the province’s commitment to preserving history while expanding public health capacity. Under the Pakistan Peoples Party-led government, broader reforms include upgrading tertiary hospitals, enhancing emergency care, improving maternal and child health, developing specialised centres in cardiology and oncology, ensuring transparent procurement, and strengthening healthcare professional training.

The chief minister also noted SIAG’s role in building local expertise through physician training and announced plans for satellite centres in Sindh’s peripheral regions to decentralise services, reduce the burden on urban hospitals, and ensure timely care across the province.

Congratulating the SIAG team, Dow University of Health Sciences, the Health Department, and all partners, Mr Shah reaffirmed the provincial government’s full support.
